Do you have any advice for character designs? i really like yours and find it hard to get back into it
Usual advice:
- Create an archive of inspirations, and one for references that are broken up into categories you find relevant (like I have folk costume folders for each continent with subfolders for demographics, era, fantasy etc)
- Clasps, fasteners, detail shots etc are also a good reference folder
- Draw what you like and study designs you adore
- Collect color schemes
- Thumbnailing and doing rough colour block sketches. I don’t do this because I Intuit and redesign my designs a Lot, but other people swear by this
- 70:30 and 60:40 ratio for color and contrast is a good rule of thumb
- Orange and Blue, Green and Red, and Purple and Yellow are the contrast colour sets. Pop them off each other but don’t blend or layer them directly as they’ll turn brown (use a midtone of some kind)
- Natural skin colours don’t count in colour schemes, we disregard them because we are so used to seeing them that they’re neutral. This means if you use unnatural colour skins you’ll need to be more considerate for color schemes.
- That said, browns and peaches and blondes DO count outside of the human details
- Color schemes tend to be 5-7 colors before they get cluttered. If you want to make it pop, go for lower. If going higher, cluster them into the same tone ranges to keep them harmonious.
- Use a brush to draw chains, braids etc and then go back over to fix. Save yourself the time but still edit brush work otherwise it won’t match. I have a folder of just common pattern pieces I use extensively to save time.
- Make your own pattern templates or buy them, like gingham and houndstooth
- Practice
have your thoughts changed at all on the MH reboot?
Uhhh I still don’t like them but there’s been a couple good ones. I really liked the skultimate secrets #2 sets. Clawdeen hair looks great (and the pawmade was such a lovely touch).
I don’t like the Lagoona still.
A lot of the fashion is just not my thing, I don’t get what they’re going for most of the time and when I do it’s more the things from this next generation of teenager’s fashion sense that I’ve never liked. 😅
because i’m curious—
how do you do your flat colours in digital art?
opaque/hard round brush
the select tool + fill bucket
fill bucket using the lineart as a reference layer
lasso colour fill tool
a textured/rough brush
i don’t do flat colours (painterly style/painting in general i guess)
i don’t do colours at all
other (tags!)
i’m not an artist i just like feeling included
See Resultspersonally i go between hard round brush and the lasso fill tool in csp depending on my mood/what i’m colouring
